Rest in Peace, Godfather of the Joker

by

Let’s have a moment of appreciation for Jerry Robinson, who died in New York on Wednesday at the ripe old age of 89.

Robinson was a cartoonist for the Batman comics and originated the Dark Knight’s archenemy, the Joker, and side kick, Robin.

Robinson also designed covers for Playbill (theatre geeks lament!) and created his own sets of lesser-known comics, such as Atoman and London. He was active in defending artists’ rights, drumming up support for the original Superman creators and their heirs in their fight for proper payment from DC Comics, and working to free an Uruguayan cartoonist who was imprisoned for his political drawings.

View his full NY Times obituary here. The Cool Ship sends its condolences to Mr. Robinson’s loved ones, and we’re really grateful for all his contributions.
