A-droidable: R2D2 rolls through Etsy

by

Did you know that if you simply type “R2D2″ into Etsy you will be smacked in the face with more than 1,100 items of Star Wars-acana featuring everyone’s favorite chirping deus ex machina?

Geek chic. Is that a thing or is that an overused phrase? Either way, this is cute. Image courtesy of GoChaseRabbits

Because I love online shopping and because I have been told by my editors that a list of reasons why Agent Coulson is the best character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not a legitimate article topic (Especially when half of the reasons are either, “Because” or, “Deal with it.”) I have returned to my favorite interwebby flea market.

Look, this weekend I’ll be working with Mike to take the ultimate black mark off of my geek cred card – I will watch Star Wars. And, in honor of this epic achievement that many other people achieved when they were six (Which I think makes it a bigger deal that I’m doing it now; sort of like when a grown up gets chicken pox. Well, except that can be dangerous. You know what; I redact that analogy. Scrap it!), I have combined my cinematic excitement and overall state of boredom to bring you some highlights of the Etsy merchandise featuring everyone’s favorite trashcan thingy that beeps all cute like (Look, I’ll update this after I see it this weekend and learn the formal name for R2D2).

There’s no skirting how awesome this is

Etsy seller GoChaseRabbits is taking orders for a custom R2D2-inspired full skirt ($64.99), you know the kind of skirt you use to twirl.

I love this because it works both as a piece of Star Wars fan ephemera and as something legitimately wearable, putting it in the same hallowed class as T-shirts. Also, I generally love skirts. Sorry, it’s a byproduct of years of

sorority-ness. I can’t help it; I occasionally lapse into girly-girl taste.

These will be useful in about six months

Let’s take a journey to the future, shall we? Not too far into the future, I left my Tardis on my other jacket. Let’s say seven months from now. It’s so cold! But, I need to use my smartphone! I’m at an impasse!

Thank goodness gracious for these R2D2 fingerless gloves ($40)! Now I won’t have to guess if that restaurant is good; I can use my Urbanspoon app because I have full use of my fingers. Also, people on the street immediately know that I am a geek of taste and refinement because of both my gloves and where I am eating.

Whip these pictures out right before their prom

I don’t want to get all lady-stereotype on you, but I’m a fan of the babies.  But even I can admit that young infants often look a little….well out of this world (With the notable exception of my future brother-in-law’s daughter who was cute from go. Seriously.).

Emphasize that alien-like quality and the pseudo wisdom that many New Age-y types ascribe to babies with this crochet baby R2D2 hat ($12). I recommend saving these pictures for your child’s first date or wedding slideshow.

As if R2D2 needed to be even more souped up and specialized, here’s a screenprinted hoodie from Etsy seller lalocota5317 featuring a lowrider version of the 3-wheeled rebel ($40).

Cupcake Star Wars

The only way these could be better is if they were the Avengers. There! I said it! Image courtesy of WonderlandWhimzy

Who says Star Wars fans can’t be hardcore? (Actually, I don’t know anyone who says that, since all my friends are Star Wars fans.)

R2D2 you’re a dish

I don’t know why this exists, I only know that I want to make like Fry and tell them to shut up and take my money. Seller WonderlandWhimzy has a collection of various geek culture icons portrayed as cupcakes. Where this idea came from, who knows! But, I’m glad she thought of it because I need approximately all of them to geekify my kitchen.

Here, we see her 4″x4″ R2D2 cupcake painting ($8), but according to her store, she also has rest of the Rebels and a few baddies too.
