I Want My MTV Back! [Rocking The Boat]

by

I’m just gonna put this out there…I hate what MTV has become. There, I said it. And from that, I offer another statement…I don’t think they should be hosting the VMAs anymore. I mean, they did officially drop the “Music Television” part off of their logo two years ago. They barely show music videos anymore, except for late at night or when they happen to have a time slot open in between one of their moronically, mind-numbing reality shows. They’ve strayed so far away from their music television beginnings, that it only made sense to drop that moniker. Though they should’ve picked up the title of “Television With Less Value Than A Pile Of Fecal Matter,” but that just doesn’t flow very well.

I miss the days when MTV played music videos and music-based programming all the time and reserved television shows for late at night. Those were the good ol’ days. But once crap like The Real World and TRL started becoming popular, it all went down from there. It was perfectly fine when it was shows like Beavis and Butthead, Liquid Television, Aeon Flux, The Maxx, and others of the like. I also miss Yo! MTV Raps tremendously. Those were great shows. I didn’t care for My So Called Life. Not my cup of tea. But still, the shows were good back then. However, once MTV decided to delve into the reality tv genre, everything went to hell. It was a slow decent but eventually, within the past two decades, it’s turned into the flaming ball of feces that it is today.

Shows like Jersey Shore, 16 & Pregnant, True Life, Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2, and all the incarnations of Real World and Road Rules are what bring in the ratings nowadays. The viewers apparently find this mindless “entertainment”…ummm well, entertaining. I just don’t get it. None of it is worthwhile at all. I feel like I lost moments from my life that I’ll never get back just from watching the commercials, I can only imagine how quickly my soul would die from regular viewings.

They started a second network, MTV2, to take over music video duties but even that eventually became overrun with more stupid shows. They’ve created other channels like MTV Jams and MTV Hits but they’ll never quite capture the magic of the original MTV. Today, they are just a hollow, lackluster shell of the network they once were and, therefore, do not deserve to and should not be allowed to host the Video Music Awards anymore. Not just because the majority of their programming is worthless drivel but also because they were responsible for catapulting Britney Spears and Justin Bieber, among many other talentless hacks, into super-stardom.

You brought this hell upon us all, MTV! Shame on you!

And just to remind you of the old MTV awesomeness…Here’s episode one of The Maxx!

You’re welcome.

  1. I couldn’t agree more! I did like the early Road Rules I will not lie. But all the crap they play today is worthless, the only good thing I heard from any of those shows was in Teen Mom where a local band somehow got part of one of their songs into an episode. That is the only episode I watched till their music played. And that made me a little sad that it was that show, but they got national coverage. Though be it, in a crappy (under-exaggerated) show.

  2. You’re just old. Go play a cd or turn on pandora! ;)
