Recently a Kickstarter Project called Tropes vs. Women in Video Games was brought to my attention. Anita Sarkeesian, of Feminist Frequency, is a feminist (duh) seeking to explore…well…common tropes of women in video games.
I’m sure you got that from the title.

It’s an interesting topic, and while I’m not a flag-waving, card-carrying, hyper-feminist, I can agree with a lot of her points. I consider myself fairly open-minded, so I wouldn’t be adverse to watching her final product.
Her original Kickstarter was looking for $6,000 to produce a series of videos on the topic. If you’ll take a look at the page, though, you’ll see she’s far surpassed her goal. At the time of this article’s writing, $142,016 had been pledged.
That’s pretty impressive, right? How’d she end up with so much?
Trolls.
See, the gaming community is made up of a myriad of different types. But, the most vocal type, the troll gamer, is a bunch of immature, vitrol-spewing morons who take it upon themselves to defend the “honor” of their favorite pastime.
Consider some of the comments from her YouTube video (Warning, some strong language ahead):

I’m all for free speech, for expressing opinions and voicing disagreement. But, what’s with the vicious personal attacks? I stopped digging through the comments at around page 300. They just went on and on and on! And some of them were MUCH worse than the above.
(To be fair, there were many reasonable individuals who didn’t stoop to name calling. To those, I tip my hat. And, of course, there were many who came to Sarkeesian’s defense, as well.)
Here’s the ironic thing: The reason she’s raised so much money is because of the nasty trolls! Of this, I am certain. Because of their lack of common decency, a level of awareness has been raised around her that has called like-minded individuals to her cause. Shoot, I bet she’s gotten pity pledges, too!
So, take that nasties!
Seriously, though, I literally cannot understand why this subject has garnered so much ugly-pulsing-vein-in-the-forehead anger!
Help me out, The Cool Ship readers. Explain to me why so many gamers rose to try to tear this woman down!
