Boy/Girl Meets World

Boy Meets World is a goofy, wonderful show. I watched it when I was in my adolescence, and I always stop on the show if it’s on when I’m channel flipping.

Even though the show was a sitcom, it was not afraid to deal with important issues. I remember plenty of episodes that ended on a bittersweet or dark note, especially when the show was dealing with Shawn Hunter’s various problems.

Last week, the Disney Channel announced that they were working on a sequel of sorts to Boy Meets World, about a pre-teen daughter of Cory and Topanga, with the possibility of Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel reprising their roles.

To me, this is maybe the best idea for a show sequel ever! Okay, maybe not ever, but it’s still a pretty good idea for a few reasons.

1. Disney Channel understands pre-teens. My son enjoys Disney Jr. on the Disney Channel, and I see advertisements all the time for pre-teen sitcoms. I’m a little ashamed to admit that the promos tend to make me laugh. TGIF-style sitcoms have migrated to the Disney Channel, and they’re doing pretty well there.

2. I think a sitcom like this is needed, so long as it isn’t afraid to tackle the tough subjects: puberty, divorce, sex, money, relationships. Making people laugh and making people think was one of the hallmarks of the original series. I don’t think it would be smart for Disney to clean up some of the classic sitcom-friendly grittiness.

3. I don’t know what Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage are doing anymore, but it would be nice to see them on TV again. Ben Savage would make a great sitcom parent. He’s been prepping for it since he started playing Cory in 1993. I would especially hope for some choice William Daniels cameos.

Girl Meets World is an interesting idea. I think the kids these days could really take to this show if it’s done right. And hey, it might attract some of us 30-somethings that watched the original as kids.

I’ll definitely be watching!
