British Actresses are HOT

I don’t think it’s any big secret that the United States has a not-so-secret love affair with Great Britain. Pretty much since we hacked the apron strings from our uppity overlords and became more than just “the colonies,” we’ve kept tabs on the pulse of English society, importing everything from tea and crumpets to an ill-concealed desire for Royals of our own to watch and obsess over. (There were freaking Royal wedding parties all over the country when William married Kate! They aren’t our prince and princess! We don’t have a monarchy!)

I must confess, however, to a certain amount of British-lovin’. There are a number of British shows and movies that I enjoy quite a lot. For instance, Doctor Who is up there among my top favorites of the moment, and I’m eagerly awaiting the return of Downton Abbey in January to PBS.

Recently, Marie Claire did a photoshoot featuring British actresses. I watched the subsequent video and came to several conclusions: I need to go to England and British actresses are HOT.

Check it out:

So, obviously most actresses are beautiful, right? With the possible exception of character actors, most women who make it into film and television are gorgeous in some way.

Who is this? Screen grab from the video.

(And I’m NOT going to get into a “But, what are you considering ‘hot’ and ‘beautiful’ and ‘gorgeous’ to be?” fight! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I’m most supremely glad for that. And I sincerely hope you all know that “beauty” can only be on the surface, and it’s what’s on the inside that counts and all that. Seriously. I KNOW. Believe me, I KNOW. But, sometimes, one can appreciate the packaging, too. For some interesting meditations on beauty, check out Lauren Mathue’s series here, here and here.)

What struck me in this video was how different some of the actresses looked. Obviously, makeup and a change of clothes can spiff up anyone, but these women are simply striking! Plus, I really enjoyed seeing some of them in something other than period costuming. I honestly didn’t even recognize Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates from Downton Abbey) at first!

Impressive, ladies.

What do you think?
